Vineyard & Cellar

Our vineyard and wine cellar

Vines have always been part of Domaine de Verchant...

Today, 16 hectares of vines are cultivated using organic and integrated methods on the Verchant estate.
In April 2022, the estate expanded with the acquisition of Château des Mazes in Saint-Aunès, bringing the total cultivated area to 40ha of vines.

A PIONEER VINEYARD

In the soil of rolled pebbles, characteristic of the "La Méjanelle" terroir, the vineyard benefits under the southern sun from the conjunction of the influence of the mistral and sea breezes. Over the entire estate (16 hectares), old vines rub shoulders with those recently planted.

Jules Leenhardt, a wine merchant from an old protestant family from Montpellier, bought the Domaine de Verchant in 1878. The primary motivation for this acquisition was to fight against the Phylloxera disease that was destroying the world's vineyards, by introducing American plants resistant to this parasite. His objective: to re-establish the production of the vine to produce wines again and sell varieties of table grapes.

OUR WINES

With over 2,000 years of winemaking history, the estate owes its name to Pierre Verchant, Bishop of Montpellier, who acquired it in February 1582. Today, owned by the Mestre family, the vineyard extends over nearly 38 hectares of certified organic vines, spread across two properties: Domaine de Verchant and Château Les Mazes in Saint-Aunès, acquired in 2022. Located on the La Méjanelle terroir, the vineyard is rooted in soils of rounded pebbles, remnants of the ancient Rhône riverbed. A Mediterranean climate combined with precise parcel-by-parcel vineyard management enables us to produce elegant, generous, and distinctive wines. Step inside… and discover our expertise and our great wines from the Languedoc!
